SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN LOGO
Each year the Carleton Industrial Design Student Association holds a contest within the school each year to find a logo for the school apparel. This design was submitted and chosen as the winner for the 2019/2020 school year.
I started with making quick thumbnail sketches on the bus home from class. The main chosen concept served to address two design issues:
The first issue was the overuse of the Cube in representing industrial design. Because the discipline of industrial design can be difficult for some to explain, it is often represented by the Cube. This concept aimed to accurately express the field of design without using the cube as a symbol.
The second issue addressed was communicating to non-designers what the program entails. As many are not familiar with the Industrial Design program, it was a priority for the school's apparel to convey what designers do. The final concept features three different products typically designed by industrial designers.
The final logo features a shoe, a chair, and a car created from one continuous line. It shows that there are many varying areas of industrial design, but also that they are all interconnected.

The final three products were chosen carefully so that both non-designers and designers would recognize them as design pieces.

The logo was applied to stickers, patches, totes, and several articles of clothing.
